FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANNISAA Organization of Canada Calls for Immediate Action to End Violence and Oppression in Palestine

Toronto, ON – October 7, 2024 – The ANNISAA Organization of Canada stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine as they continue to endure unimaginable suffering under the weight of occupation. For over a year, the escalating violence has resulted in the loss of thousands of innocent lives, the destruction of homes, and the shattering of entire communities.

The trigger for this ongoing tragedy occurred on October 7, 2023, when a Hamas attack on Israel led to the deaths of 1,139 Israelis and the capture of Israeli hostages. However, this violence is not an isolated event but part of a broader, decades-long conflict. Seventy-six years of occupation, systemic oppression, and indignity have been inflicted upon the Palestinian people. In just the past year, nearly 42,000 Palestinians have been killed, with tens of thousands buried under rubble in Gaza, 800 more killed in the Occupied West Bank, and many more lives lost in Lebanon at the hands of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

"This is not just a humanitarian crisis—it is a violation of human rights and international law," said Nadia Sayeh, Founder of ANNISAA Organization of Canada. "The global community cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the devastation in Palestine. Silence in the face of genocide is complicity."

ANNISAA condemns all forms of violence and urges world governments, international organizations, and civil society to take immediate steps to:

  • End the violence and implement an immediate ceasefire on all fronts.

  • Secure the safe return of hostages.

  • Hold those responsible for violations of human rights accountable.

  • Work towards a just and lasting peace that respects the Palestinian people’s right to sovereignty, freedom, and self-determination.

"We mourn with the families who have lost loved ones and stand with the Palestinian people in their fight for justice and dignity," added Sayeh. "As Muslim women, we understand the trauma of living under oppression, but we also recognize the power of resistance, resilience, and solidarity in the global fight for justice."

On this solemn anniversary, ANNISAA calls on all Canadians to raise their voices against this ongoing injustice. We urge everyone to educate themselves on the root causes of the conflict and to advocate for peace and human rights in Palestine and beyond.

The global community must not only speak out but also take concrete steps to end the occupation and break the cycle of violence. We honor the lives lost, the resilience of those still fighting, and commit to building a future where no community has to endure the horrors of genocide and occupation.
