Land Acknowledgement

ANNISAA extends our profound respect and immeasurable gratitude to all the ancestors and keepers of the land on whose traditional territories our work takes place. We recognize that the ANNISAA Organization of Canada is located on the unceded territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13, signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit and the Williams Treaty, signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands. This land is sacred, historical, and significant.

Every time we acknowledge this truth, we have an invitation and an opportunity to reflect on the wrongs of the past, what we do in the present, and what we can do to continually honour the people whose lands and water we benefit from today.

This statement is only a first step in honouring the land we live on and its peoples. It must be paired with education, understanding, and informed action. As an organization dedicated to empowering women and building inclusive communities, we commit to integrating these values into our work and fostering relationships rooted in respect and reconciliation.

We also acknowledge all treaty peoples – including those who came here as settlers – as migrants either in this generation or in generations past – and those of us who came here involuntarily, particularly forcibly dis-planted Africans, brought here as a result of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and slavery.
