ANNISAA Organization of Canada works diligently to engage Muslim women and youth advocates at the grassroots level as well as build partnerships with the Muslim communities we serve in order to achieve advocacy success.

The ANNISAA Charter outlines the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders in the Muslim communities, including Muslim women and girls, and presents guiding principles meant to serve as a catalyst for change to ensure that Muslim women and girls can live to their full potential. There are gaps we need to address so Muslim women and girls can access the information and support they need to live the healthiest lives possible.

What is advocacy?

Advocacy is a process used to increase awareness and to influence and effect positive change. These changes could be in attitude, policies and practices of government, business and general public perception.  Advocates often seek specific changes in public policy, legislation and resource allocation.

For ANNISAA Organization of Canada, this means influencing elected officials, policymakers, public figures and the general public to support policies, programs and funding that will help achieve advocacy priorities. Examples of these priorities would be to:

  1. TO BE INNOVATIVE AND INCLUSIVE: Our programs address the most important and relevant issues facing Muslim women. We reach Muslim women across GTA who need our attention most.
  2. TO BE A LEADER AND THE CHANGE: We nurture the leadership of Muslim women by providing access to resources, networks, mentors, and opportunities to build new skills. We encourage the understanding and elimination of barriers, including poverty, racism and violence.
  3. TO BE A CATALYST: Our work inspires action in the lives of Muslim women and communities

Advocacy is not only speaking with and writing to elected officials (e.g. Federal and Provincial Members of Parliament). Advocacy also includes building relationships with community leaders, as well as the general public.

ANNISAA advocates are at the heart of the Organization and our efforts to help Canadians Muslim women and girls live healthy lives.
